The section of acquisition of the book funds of the National Library named after M.F.Akhundov was formed in 1923 and consists of several structure departments. The section’s staffs are of 13 employees.
The section of acquisition is designated for the centralised acquisition of the funds of the library by the documents, books, periodicals and the continuing publications, the music and audio-visual materials. The acquisition of the systems of funds of the library is carried out via the different sources:

compulsory free of charge specimen of the works of press;
-
purchasing of documents in the book-trade organizations (books shop, book exhibitions-auctions);
-
gifts of the organizations, authors and the other individuals;
-
inside governmental exchange;
On January 01, 2005 the fund of the library was consisted of 4.5513244 publications:

There were received printings in 674 names to the sector of periodicals (889 specimens). 101 of them are in Azerbaijani language, newspapers in 51 names in Russian language, 313 names in Azerbaijani language, 47 names of magazines are in Russian language.
The section of the inter-republican book exchange

The section of the inter-republican exchange of books was established in 1961 under the section of acquisition and in 1978 it is acting as the independent section.
The section is designated for storing and using of the exchange and reserve funds of the libraries, as well as the specimens of printings, purchased at the expense of the budget of the library, entrance via the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Azerbaijan Republic, books gifted by their authors.
The main duties of the section:

participation in forming of the organizations (receive, recording, library treatment, arrangement and storing) of the exchange fund of the National Library;
-
redistribution of the duplicates publications in the Central Library of the Republic, realization of the free of charge transfer of the duplicate and non profile publications to the other libraries and organizations in the pre-determined manner. The remarkable feature of this fund is their universality. In there complement there is local and foreign publications on the various fields of knowledge of wide chronological diapason.
The Section and cataloguing of books

The section of treatment of books and cataloguing was created in 1923. Before 1947 the section was engaged in processing and cataloguing of documentary of the library. In 1941 in the section of processing there were established 2 new sections: the section of acquisition and the section of treatment and cataloguing.
Form 1950 the section of treatment and cataloguing started to create the systematic catalogue for readers. The main duties of this section is to catalyse the non printed publications in the Russian language, the organization of the alphabetic catalogue. From 2004 the section started to process the national literature, published in Azerbaijan in Russian and Azerbaijani languages for the section “Books of Azerbaijan”.

The section of scientific systematization of literature is an independent structure from 1980, the main function of which is the working out the classification systems on the fields of knowledge and organizing the corresponding thematic catalogues. And the main purpose of the activity of this section is the provision of the effective using of the funds of National Library via presenting the full and the full-aspects information on their content to the readers and the subscribers of the National Library.

The section of servicing the readers of the National Library named after M.F.Akhundov, formed in 1923 started to its activity as the reading hall. From 1928 it is the independent structure. The section of book funds of the National Library is one of the biggest book-stacks of the republic. The section carries out its activity from 1923 as the independent structure unit.
The main task of the section is the realisation of the scientifically based forming of its funds with the purpose of the permanent storing and using in the library and information servicing of readers and subscribers of the Library. The section carries out the complex of works on organizing the provision of the safe keeping of publications.

All publications, included to the main fund of the Library are reflected in the catalogues and the card index of the National Library.

The fund of Azerbaijan Literature of National Library was established in 1947 and at the present it counts than 7000 books of single copy, more than 39 editions of newspapers dated from 1875 to 1928, 465 editions of journals since 1906, 716 copies of scientific works, 857 microfilm books and 852 newspaper-magazine microfilms. Since 2005 there has been created an electronic catalogue of the fund.

Until 1960 the department of printed music and sound recordings of National Libraries was functioning as a section. Since 1961 it is an independent structure. It counts more than 121 000 of musical editions. It is an integrated department of National Library. The fund of the department counts more than 224 000 of copies of literature, which includes 200000 copies of printed music, 30000 of sound recordings, 4000 of music handwritings and 10000 books about music. The collection of the department includes printed music fund, sound recordings fund and a subsidiary fund.
The department has the only in the republic golden fund of national sound recordings and printed music copies. In 1981 the “Azerbaijani composers’ handwritings” fund was established.
The department funds are open to the musicians of all specialties, students and music admires.
The department has its own reading room with 20 places for the individual listening to the sound recordings.
The department of foreign literature and international book exchange

The department is an independent complex structure since 1965.
There are books, journals, magazines published in 40 languages. The sources of material are UNO, IBE various publishing houses, embassies and exhibitions. The department is a reserve library of UNO and OSCE. The books received from these organizations are revised by the department, processed by the library methods and given to the numerous readers. The department collection comprises the works of authors published abroad and the books about Azerbaijan. The department has been engaged in the International Book Exchange since 1965 and in the International Book Subscription since 1978.

The Mass Culture Department is an independent structure since 1942.
It is the main department which organizes different kinds of cultural activities, such as historical festivals, significant dates, library books exhibitions and provides communication of information about the activities to the MEDIA.

Foundation of the department in the republic was connected first of all with organization of mass bibliographical network.
In 1960 the department of scientific and methodical library studies was established. It serves as guarantee for providing methodical assistance to all central library systems and other libraries as well.
Reference and Bibliographical Department

Reference and bibliographical department exists since 1927.
It provides bibliographical help on catalogue and card-index system informs readers about reference and bibliographical knowledge as well as answers to written and oral inquiries from high state agencies and newly-established structures, companies, organizations and other groups of readers.

The department of area studies and scientific bibliography of NL began functioning in 1940 on the basis of the Department of Information and Bibliography. But since 1974 it has been operating as a separate structure named “Area and National bibliography». The main task of the department is creating informational and bibliographical mechanism and providing informational services. The department makes up and keeps the fund of written references on area studies and publishes multi-profiled bibliographical indexes.

Scientific and Research Department on Library Study of NL has been functioning since 1975. It conducts scientific and research work on library, bibliography and book studies in the Republic.
Publishing Department

It was established in 1980 as a sector on the basis of scientific and research department and has been operating as an independent publishing department since 1981.<br><br>
The department conducts editing of all publishing materials of library departments in NL and in the Republic.

Training Center founded in 2001 was completely equipped due to financial support of Soros Fund. Since 2006 the department has been functioning independently. Its main task is organization of continuously training program for its own employees as well as for employees of other libraries.

from distance” (Virtual) section was arranged to better service for
readers since March of 2008.

March of 2010 our readers can get books from the Russian State
Library. This orders implemented by “Interlibrary Subscriptions”
section. All workers of Interlibrary Subscriptions section, readers,
Centralized Library Systems (CLS) of Baku, Sumgayit, Absheron region
and other libraries can use Interlibrary Subscription section.

About the department
Since
2009, January the department of “The organization of electronic
dissertation fund and using of them” activates as the independence
structure. The dissertations protecting in Azerbaijan from 1994 till
today are covered maintenance at this department. It is also
possible to enter the virtual reader hall of Electron dissertations
of Russia State National Library by internet at the department. Now
it is made the electron version of the dissertations being at the
fund of the department for virtual service to users.
